PLEASE NOTE – Car Parks Closed on weekdays THIS WEEK!

It is some time since the tree surgeons were here at Stella. Consequently, a fair amount of work is required, with the lime trees at the eastern end of the property requiring pollarding (it’s nine years since this was last done), three trees in the cemetery that are diseased/dead that are earmarked for removal and necessary work on the old apple tree in the walled garden too. All of this has been passed by the authorities at the council. The team at Whole Tree, Ryton, will once again be carrying out the work on our behalf. The work has been pencilled in for the weeks beginning 22nd and 29th April.

Consequently, there will be no parking in either the front or the back car park Monday to Friday of this week or next… …even if the gates are open!!! Normally, the gates will be closed and locked when work is being carried out, but obviously the contractors will need to come and go on occasions… …they may need the occasional Costa and Greggs sausage roll too!!! Access for our Masses will be via the side door.

Jubilee Celebrations – Advanced Notice!

Some of you will be aware that Fr. Noel Colahan, one of my eminent predecessors here at Stella, will be celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of his Ordination on 14th June – 60 years of service to God and the people of our diocese. We will be celebrating with him at a special Mass on Friday, 7th June, the feast of the Sacred Heart, followed by a ‘do’ in the parish room.

Parish Summer Fayre – a Date for the Diaries…  …iphones etc etc.!

We’ve settled on a date for the annual parish summer fayre… …apparently, it doesn’t interfere with Wimbledon! The date for the fayre this year will be Sunday, 21st July. Please do remember to leave the day free and to mark it in your diaries and electronic gadgets. It’s always a great day of fun for all family members, and I’m told that there are some new stalls for this year’s event!

Roof Repairs.

We have been waiting for some time for repairs to the church roof following on from the winter storms. The loss of some slates has led to some water ingress. Due the fact that the slates have been on our roof since the 1830s, they are very slick in wet weather… …and as we have had more than our fair share of rain, the work has been delayed time and again. Hopefully, we will have a period of sunshine which will enable this work to be completed, followed by the renewal of the garage roof which is now beyond redemption. Unfortunately, when the work finally commences, the car parks will need to be closed again to provide a safe working environment.

Advanced Notice – Annual May Procession.

I thought that I had better provide a little advanced notice for our parish Annual May Procession. Our May Procession this year will be taking place on Sunday, 5th May, beginning at 9.45 a.m. in the back walled garden, concluding with the celebration of our Sunday Mass. Many of you will remember the May Processions from your own childhood. Hopefully, we will be able to provide our children and grandchildren with the same happy memories of faith in our turn.

More Chuckles… …?!

A parent was driving down the road in a sweat because she had to drop her kids at school, was late again, and couldn’t find a parking space. Looking up towards heaven, she said, “Lord, take pity on me. If you find me a parking place, I’ll go to Mass every Sunday for the rest of my life and give up drinking wine.” Miraculously, a parking space opened up near the school. The woman looked up to heaven and said, “Never mind, Lord; I found one on my own.”

A sad-faced Doug walked into a flower shop early one morning. The assistant was ready to take his order for a funeral piece, based on the look on Doug’s face, but soon realized his assumption was wrong as Doug asked for a basket of flowers to be sent to his wife for their anniversary.
“And what day will that be?” the clerk asked.   Glumly, Doug replied, “Yesterday!”
